Integrated Data Science for Researchers: Mastering SPSS Logic and R Execution

Date : 29 & 30 April 2026

Venue : Institut Marin Borneo,

           Universiti Malaysia Sabah

Introduction

This two-day intensive course is designed to bridge the gap between user-friendly statistical software and advanced script-based programming for comprehensive data analysis. The first day focuses on mastering SPSS, beginning with a critical recap of statistical "Do’s and Don’ts" to ensure participants can correctly choose analytical methods based on specific research problems. Key topics include comparing means and medians using parametric and nonparametric methods, distinguishing among correlation, regression, and association, and, lastly, exploring the Analysis of Variance family—specifically ANOVA, MANOVA, and ANCOVA — with a heavy emphasis on proper data structuring prior to analysis.

The second day transitions to R Programming specifically for biostatistical applications. Participants will be introduced to the RStudio environment, learning essential data structures and basic syntax for importing and exporting data. The curriculum progresses into data manipulation and the execution of both parametric and non-parametric analyses. To conclude the workshop, the session covers professional data visualization using the ggplot2 package, followed by a dedicated hands-on practice and Q&A session to ensure all participants can independently apply their new coding skills.
