Metagenomic Microbiome Data Analysis Workshop

Date : 15 Oct 2026
Time : 8.30 am - 4.00 pm

Venue : Aquculture Incubator, Institut Marin Borneo,

           Universiti Malaysia Sabah

Introduction

The Metagenomic Microbiome Data Analysis Workshop offers a comprehensive, practical guide to modern microbiome research methodologies. Designed for researchers and students, this intensive one-day program bridges the gap between biological sample collection and complex bioinformatic data interpretation. Participants will transition from foundational theories to hands-on software applications, equipping them with the skills needed to process and analyze their own metagenomic datasets.

Workshop Overview
The curriculum is structured to follow the natural progression of a microbiome study. The morning sessions establish the theoretical groundwork, covering fundamental microbiome concepts and the complete laboratory workflow from initial sampling and DNA extraction through to sequencing. Following this, the focus shifts to computational biology, where participants will learn how to process raw FASTQ data into usable count tables. The afternoon is entirely dedicated to practical, hands-on data analysis, featuring guided demonstrations using accessible statistical platforms

Learning Outcomes

1.    Grasp the foundational principles of microbiome research and its scientific applications.

2.    Understand the complete metagenomic analysis workflow, including protocols for sampling, DNA extraction, and sequencing.

3.    Process raw sequencing files (FASTQ) and accurately convert them into structured count tables for downstream analysis.

4.    Execute data visualization and comprehensive statistical analyses using the MicrobiomeAnalyst platform.

5.    Perform advanced comparative profiling and biological interpretation using STAMP (Statistical Analysis of Metagenomic Profiles).
