Basic Fish Parasitology
Identification

Date : 19 September 2024

Venue : Tropical Ecosystem Lab, BMRI, Universiti Malaysia Sabah

Introduction

This introductory parasitology course is designed for beginners, offering a foundational understanding of parasitology in the context of aquaculture. The course is ideal for individuals new to the field, including students, early-career professionals, and anyone interested in learning about the basics of parasitology and its significance.

Objectives

01

Understand the basics of parasitology and the life cycles of common parasites.

02

Identify and diagnose parasitic infections in aquaculture and other relevant fields.

03

Learn best practices for parasite prevention and control measures.

Training Synopsis

Throughout the one-day training, participants will explore the essential concepts of parasitology, including an overview of what parasites are, the different types of parasites affecting aquatic organisms, and the impact these parasites can have on fish health and aquaculture productivity. The course will cover key topics such as:

1.    Introduction to Parasitology: Understanding the basic principles and definitions related to parasitology, including the role and importance of parasites in aquatic ecosystems.

2.    Types of Parasites: Identifying and understanding the different categories of parasites, including protozoans, helminths, and ectoparasites, and how these organisms interact with their aquatic hosts.

3.    Life Cycles and Transmission: Learning about the life cycles of common parasites and how they are transmitted among aquatic species, which is crucial for understanding how to break the cycle of infection.

4.    Diagnosis and Identification: Gaining hands-on experience in recognizing and diagnosing parasitic infections using basic diagnostic tools and techniques, such as microscopy.

5.    Introduction to Control Measures: Discussing basic control and management strategies to prevent and manage parasitic infections, including biosecurity practices and treatment options.

Training Outcome

By the end of this training, participants will have a foundational understanding of parasitology, equipping them with the knowledge and basic skills necessary to recognize and address parasitic challenges in aquaculture. This introductory course lays the groundwork for further study or professional development in aquaculture health management and parasitology.
